When I work, I take reality as a starting point and then I break it down into chemical particles. Afterward I work with these individuated elements – some of them, never all of them – on composing a new work, a lighter and more open reality. I do it because I don’t go to a psychoanalyst and I find it very therapeutic to tell other people the things that you would like to say to yourself. During my lessons, however, I like to make it clear that nowadays there is no real need for new photographs, and so new photographers are not needed either. With a hint of mischief and realism, I invite them to think seriously about whether it is necessary for new producers of images to be created on this planet of ours.

The first step is to create new green areas, infrastructures and sustainable mobility. But architecture can lend a hand on a much more subtle level, anticipating the demands of citizens. From its inception, photography has been an integral part of war and military operations.

We all travel a lot, but we have less and less time to explore the world. Low-cost airlines have transformed our agenda, pulverizing the idea of travel and transforming it into short stays of two or three days. Trapped in business meetings and dinners, we don’t have time to explore the city. The title Alibi means an excuse to tell your boss, or yourself, to get some time to go and discover the city. It’s an invitation to be open, flexible, curious, especially in places off the beaten track, the ones tour operators would never take into consideration.

For me the fundamental thing is to find an ethical approach to the project in which I’m involved. If a bank called on me to design its head office, I would ask myself how to do it in the most ethical way possible. I would ask myself, for example, what is the role of the bank today in the West. I can’t speak for Europe per se, but in Germany there is certainly a need for critical practice to be fostered beyond the sometimes harshly conservative and consensual decision-making in the formalized cultural sphere.

For me, this concrete utopia is a necessary madness of extraordinary scope, carried out thanks to the work of one individual and his life.
